What might be of surprise to you is that according to the firm HIS Markit’s report on the 264 million light vehicles that were registered in the United States the average age of these cars was 11.6 years old. In this report they also predict that approximately 20 million cars on our streets will be more than 25 years old (which are considered antique). If this ends up being the case that would mean that there will be more older cars on our roads than has ever been before. Although there is of course no such thing as a car that will run forever on its own, for those who do want to keep their cars in the best shape, keep reading, especially in the case that that your car is known as being less than reliable.
It’s all about good timing
The majority of cars made these days have either a belt or chain that allow for the running of all of the moving parts within the engine. This is usually one of the first parts of the car to get worn out. And when these stop working it can have an extremely negative impact on the car’s engine. Chains are tend to wear down less quickly and do not need to be changed as often as belts do, usually between 60 and 100 thousand miles, depending on the make and model of the car. Unfortunately, this is a more expensive job than other car repairs. However, once you do bite the bullet once you should not need to replace it again for many years.
