Although it is true that when your gaslight comes on, you car still has some life left in it, one of the worst things that you can do is drive on empty. The reason for this is that gasoline allows for the cooling of the electric fuel-pump motor. Therefore, if you are running low, you risk over heating this very important piece of equipment. This can lead to a costly, early death of the electric fuel-pump motor.

As with the underground reservoirs mentioned above, your fuel tank can accumulate sediment. Running on empty can cause this sediment to be uplifted and can choke your fuel pump or injector.
