The 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder
Nicknamed the “Little Bastard” by student driver Bill Hickman, this car is probably best remembered as the model that Jimmy Dean was driving when he was killed. The frame hugged the ground but was light as a feather and this impressed drivers and car enthusiasts all over the world. The Porsche 550 Spyder remains one of the world’s favorite and most common copied classic cars. What really impressed people was its capacity to deliver flat out-perform on the track, and then to function suitably as a road car. You could drive from your home to the race track, win the race, and then drive home – all in the same vehicle.
James Dean and its impressive dual purpose road and race nature. That’s three reasons why this car should never be forgotten.
