Car Technology That is now Obsolete (or will be soon, we hope)

Joystick controls

When you think of a joystick, you likely think about staying up late in your parents’ basement playing video games, and not automobiles. However, some of the earliest car models in existence used a joystick control instead of the ubiquitous steering wheel.

Apparently going back to its roots, in the 1990s, Saab decided to revert back to this way of controlling their Prometheus in 1992. The main issue with this way of steering was that it was much too sensitive to minor changes in pressure, which made driving almost impossible. Luckily for them, it didn’t take too long for Saab to realize that a good ol’ standard steering wheel is the way to go and that joysticks should be left to playing Nintendo and not driving an automobile.
