Semaphores / Trafficators (extendable turn signals)

Okay, it wasn’t a technology break through, but there was something undoubtedly cool about this classic safety feature. These days, turn signals are seamlessly designed into side mirrors, or the flow of the vehicle’s body.

But there was something fun about a long flashing stick coming out of the side of your car to point the way you were going to turn. These were popular on trains and buses long after they disappeared from car design.

Those mechanical turn signal markers really caught the eye and made your direction very clear to other traffic and pedestrians. And even if they looked a bit like they were out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, they could easily be engineered into modern cars to give them a sense of fun.
