Classic Car Features You Forgot About

Floor-Mounted Dimmer Switch

Which of all the sticks protruding from the steering wheel, is the high beams? Well, back in the old days, they were on the floor of the car! That’s right, one could change the high beams to dim them with your foot on the floor!

So if you saw a vehicle coming towards, you didn’t have to try to work out which stick to move. Even if you were driving a different car from your own, you knew where to find the dimmer. These days, if you’re driving a rental vehicle, it’ll take you the first few days to work out which stick does what.

Back in the post-war period, you didn’t need to take your hands off the wheel to dim your lights.

Then again, those penguins at the health and safety police decided that the dimmer should be close to the turn signal stick – although how that’s improved anything at all – we’re at a loss to explain!
