1955 190SL
While the 300SL was a really fantastic car, it was also completely unaffordable. So in 1955, Mercedes developed the 190SL, a kind of cheap and cheerful version of the 300SL. Of course, it lacked the power of its older relative, but it was great to drive. It was lighter and the handling was better than the 300SL. But its influence on future SL cars is what really earns it a place on this list. If the 300SL was the grandfather, it’s the 190SL that fathered the SL-class range.
