1966 W110
The W110 was definitely a reasonably good car. But the reason it made it to our list is for its state of the art safety features. Mercedes did a lot to improve vehicle safety throughout the 1960s. But Mercedes-Benz W110 innovated the crumple-zone, a truly essential safety feature for cars of the modern era. Mercedes realized that if some parts of the car were softer than others, then these parts would absorb a greater amount of the impact in a crash – which is much more preferable than the people inside, who don’t absorb impact very well at all.
