1954 300 SL
When we say that the gullwing was invented for this car, we meant it literally. It wasn’t added to show off, it was made because the design needed it. The chassis required extra stiffness, but the additional tubes would be where the doors should be. Design and engineering set to work and came up – the gullwing door. Of course, if the car was a flop, the doors wouldn’t help it at all. As it happens, the 300SL turned out to be one of the best sports cars ever made.
