Horsepower is the stick by which we measure
But what about our friend who mainly speaks in ft-lbs and churns out all that power to the wheels? I’m talking of course about torque. This isn’t really anything that is tangible and will save you money when looking for a car but it is a way to identify a car that may give you a bit more fun while in the drivers seat. The general rule has been that if you have a higher torque than horsepower rating you’re gonna have a good time. Ok, That’s maybe not a rule but from experience every time you have a car that has that little extra Oomph! At lower rpms the chances of you having a big grin on your face while driving are more than doubled. It’s a statistical fact.
How I’ve always heard torque explained is, torque is what gets you there and horsepower is what keeps you there. Torque, like life, is all about how we get to where we are going.
