Turbine engines
Chrysler began its work on turbine engines in the late 1930s. At the time, this seemed like a novel idea. Unlike an internal combustion engine, they lasted longer and were easier and less expensive to build. They were also less likely to need to be repaired. One of the reasons for this is due to the fact that they did not need a cooling system. Another plus to the turbine engine was that essentially anything combustible could have been used as fuel. Unfortunately for Chrysler, the simplicity of the turbine was its downfall.
Although many Americans leased the Turbine Car in the early to mid-1960s, it was simply seen as too basic for the average car owner.
