Lotus Elan
Pop up headlights were popular during the 1960s when cars like the Mercury Cougrar, the Buick Riveira and the Dodge Charger prominently featured high away lights. But the contemporary hidden headlight vehicle was first seen on our roads in 1962 on that symbol of elegant, refinement and great performance, the Lotus Elan.
The Elan was truly considered to be one of the best cars of the Sixties and Seventies. But it’s greatest feature is perhaps not the car itself, but that it was the inspiration for the future of Lotus thirty years later.
The Elan almost made a modern revival when Lotus demonstrated a concept Elan at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, but it was cancelled and disappeared from view again. Perhaps the future will see another updated version of this spectacular car. But sadly, it’s unlikely to feature those pop up lights.
