Rear-Mounted Fuel Fillers

Sit in the gas station for a few minutes and you’ll soon see half a dozen people driving up to the pump with no clue at all about which side their fuel filler is located. Surely it’s possible that car designers could tackle this issue? Well – actually they did – in the past.

Right up until the Eighties, most fuel fillers were actually on the back of the car! Some were even hidden behind the license plate. How convenient! How useful! Yes, but the penguins down at health and safety got all concerned about rear mounts fuel fillers being damaged if the vehicle was rear-ended and caused some kind of tragedy.

But we’re sure today’s technology could make it safe once again. I suppose until then we’ve replaced the convenience of the rear centrally located fuel fillers – with the tiniest arrow on the fuel gauge letting us know exactly where and which side the fuel filler is on. Do you know where yours is?
