1997 Chevrolet Malibu: Motor Trend Car of the Year
The Chevy Malibu was the ultimate rental car. With its bland appearance, mediocre acceleration and sloppy handling, this well equipped car was perfect for grocery runs. Two engines were offered – the 3.1 litre V6 and the standard 2.4 litre 4 cylinder. The V6 produced only 155hp not a copious amount for a 3000 pound car. Superior products from Honda and Toyota were much more modern in design and results. The Malibu was so mediocre. This mediocrity pervaded the General Motors lineup in all its divisions. The best feature of the Malibu was its price. In 2004, the Malibu name was changed to Classic and sales were restricted to fleets. The Classic remained in production through the 2005 model year.
